Where Hope Dwells
Relationships. There's always constant talk or discussion going on about them. This talk goes on endlessly in homes, at work, in bars, in clubs, among groups, and on the radio and TV. It's everywhere! Hell, this website that you're on now is just for that purpose. .............more detail

Antidepressant Doubles for Blacks?
It came as no surprise to George Smith when a report released this week said there were significant increases in antidepressant use across all sociodemographic groups except African Americans..............more detail

Breakthrough Treatment Offers Hope for Lupus Patie
For the first time in 40 years, a new medicine to treat lupus has proved effective in a large clinical trial. The drug Benlysta, developed by Human Genome Sciences (HGS) in Rockville, Md., is promising, particularly for African American women, who are three times more likely than white woman to develop the disease, experts say. Additionally, black women tend to get the disease at a younger age and have more severe symptoms than their white counterparts. .............more detail

Erectile Dysfunction Affects Black Men
Commercials for drugs like Cialis and Viagra are mainstays on television these days, but the condition they treat -- erectile dysfunction -- is hardly something that comes up in casualconversation. In fact, despite the mainstream popularity of the medications, erectile dysfunction, which is characterized by an inability to maintain an erection long enough to have sex, still causes great embarrassment and shame for men who suffer from it..............more detail

WHAT’S THE 411?
Three months ago, I was approached by a gentleman saying, “Girl, I just want to be your friend.”I quickly realized the corniest pick up line ever had been used in the commission of apprehending my attention and to initiate a conversation. As he scanned down the circumference of my body, his eyes never negated the overwhelming physical attraction that existed. Meanwhile, I’m assuming his underlying agenda is blunt but contrary to his cheesy statement.............more detail

Repositioning Ourselves
We must admit that the female species is the most humiliated, abused and neglected in our society today; especially our Black women. It's not a wonder why black women cannot have a happy and healthy relationship with a positive black man. For example they are called every name in the book but a child of God. Names such as b's, whores, chicken heads, jump off, popper, scallywag, ma, trick and shorty, just to name a few. Those names probably vary depending on what areas in which you live and what the slangs are in that city or state, yet black men say we are their black Queens..............more detail

A Love Story
We were tenth graders when we met. Both shy, we found comfort and friendship in words. They were our playthings, and our playmates. We could always read and write magnificent ideas, daring feats, and saucy, swaggering, sexiness – the very stuff we were short of, except in our friends, our words. These words, hers and mine, fed upon each other and grew more and more adventurous, eventually drawing us together, her words and mine. We were friends, schoolmates in 1966..............more detail

Clearing Things Up PT2
Elected officials lie to the people they govern in hopes that they'll blindly follow their oil- and money-fueled leads, tabloids lie about which has-been Hollywood stars are dating each other in order to sell issues and to give the sad celebrities a slight renewal in popularity, women lie about their age, and men lie about how much they can bench press. Church folks lie about how much like Jesus there are. We even lie on how much we love each other in relationships..............more detail

Knowing True and Abiding Love
When I was young, I used to watch my grandmother clip my grandfather's toenails. I thought that was the most disgusting, subservient, oppressive act a woman could do. I was embarrassed that my grandfather NEVER washed his own hair. He would take a shower every morning but he wouldn't wash his hair, he would let my grandmother do it at the bathroom sink in a dining room chair with a shampoo/conditioner whole setup. .............more detail

Commitment is one of those qualities that everyone seems to think he or she can define, until he or she is asked to define it. Recognizing committed couples is easier than describing one. One’s actions demonstrate commitment rather than their words.

Nephrologist Martin Pollak and his team found that a common genetic mutation of the APOL1 gene might be partly responsible for African Americans' susceptibility. The mutation likely arose due to natural selection because it protects against African sleeping sickness, Pollak wrote. Yet it also makes African Americans more vulnerable to kidney disease, according to the study released last month in the online issue of Science Magazine.
